Scripture: "Write down the revelation." Habakkuk 2:2
I thank God for the reminder about the importance of journaling. I started off this year speaking to the women of True about pray and the importance of spiritual disciplines. I talked about journaling as one of the most insightful discoveries of my spiritual walk.
Mark Batterson said "I am able to connect the dots between my prayers and God's answer." I did just that, as I gave my brother's eulogy over three years ago. My family were in Canada and I was in Chicago, I felt alone, but I asked God to be with me through this very difficult time. My brother, George had stage 4 cancer and only had a month to live when it was discovered. I journaled daily, praying for salvation, "snatching my brother back from the pits of hell, binding his mind to the mind of Christ, that he would accept the gift of salvation and not disqualify himself because of his sin." I told my family in Canada to begin to play Christian music in his hospital room, to bring the presence of God into George's room, to change the atmosphere. I spoke with him often by phone. I sent out prayer request to family members in other parts of Canada. I had the joy of being on the phone talking with my brother, James on his cell phone when my Uncle Sterl, who is a pastor, was on the hospital phone, leading my brother, George to Christ. I journaled. I was talking to my cousin, Neville who is a pastor and my Uncle Sterl's son, who went to the hospital to minister to George and prayed with him to secure his salvation. I journaled, by the time I had reached Canada during Christmas break, three pastor's had spent time with my brother to secure his salvation. I shared with my brother the song Linell had written, "While We Were Sinner". The song we played at his homegoing. I stood before an audience of people who, I knew the majority, did not know Christ and opened up my journal. I went to the turned back pages, and read the hightlighted areas to deliver an eulogy connecting those in attendance to George's last days on earth, and the road that lead to his salvation. God had indeed "snatched him back from the pits of hell"!
As I shared with the women of True, journaling did not come easy, I have had and still have lapses, but the thing I encourage you to do is always, begin again. I journal 80% more than I did when I made my first attempt over twenty years ago. Journaling builds our faith when we can see the connection between our prayers and God's answer. Today I have been encouraged to pick up some of my old journals and see what prayers God has answered; because my memory is not as long as the shortest pencil.
