"Sing to the Lord a new song." Psalm 96:1
Spiritual growth is a conundrum. Conundrum is a noun with some of these definitions: 1. a situation for which there is no one solution 2. question for which there is no clear right answer 3. problem 4. a paradoxical, difficult, or insoluble problem, dilemma (Free Webster's Dictionary). To quote from the King and I, "It is a puzzlement." We want to develop holy, healthy, routines, or spiritual disciplines, BUT we have to make certain that the routines don't become routine, or empty rituals. A real danger occurs when we know how, but forget why. This then becomes familiarity.
We have to be careful about how and what we present to the Lord as worship. Some of us need to examine ourselves to see IF we are so familiar with our God and our Lord that we begin to time our ""church visit" so that we only get there in time for the Word. I know that we sometime have issues and distractions that cause us to run late, but does our love and worship stop when the music does.
Karaoke is can be a fun activity when we are with a group of friends. It can even be an icebreaker with getting to know new people. There is even a television program where celebrities take turns lip-synching and imitating musical artists. The point here is are we worshiping God or singing a song because we know the words and we "sound" good. God get tired of the same old thing. The same old routing. What He wants is to capture our heart, not just our head or memory. He wants expressions of love that reach new dimensions.
In the same way that we need a new song. We need a new prayer. We need a new prayer methodology, a new prayer vocabulary. The author of our text is encouraging us to get out of the routines we have been in and make a prayer offering, a praise, our worship expression, something new. I know this can be daunting, even intimidating; but let's do it. Let's be prepared to see, hear, and know Him in a new way.
If you want God to do something new, you cannot keep doing the same old thing.
